When I started Glitz & GlaMOM I immediately thought of any negative effects it could have for my family, my daughters. Their safety is the most important thing in the world to me. I decided to come up with a plan to keep them as private as possible while being public (in a small way) through Glitz & GlaMOM.
This is what I came up with as far as businesses & privacy.
1)NEVER TELL THE WORLD WHERE YOU ARE! I go LOTS of places with my family. We travel, we do lots of day trips, amusement parks. We are always on the go. If I share where we were, it is WAY after we have left. Lets say I am at Six Flags, I will share a post containing those pictures (if the location is mentioned) when we are back at home, NOT while we are there.
If I have a collaboration with an event, or travel, it is ALWAYS in my contract that I will share stories, pictures, videos, when we are HOME, not THERE! No one needs to know where we are at the exact moment we are there.
2)DON’T MAKE YOUR CHILDREN’S INFO PUBLIC! I told my friends & family that if they comment on anything for Glitz & GlaMOM and write about my children by name, I am going to delete it! It has happened a few times. Each time I then delete it, then text the person and let them know I did & why. I also do not write how old they are, where they go to school, where they do activities (& when). I can share how much I love my children & all the fun we have WITHOUT overexposing them. Any business page should be doing the same!
3)DELETE ANYONE OR BLOCK ANYONE WHO DOESN’T BELONG ON YOUR PAGES! This for me mostly applies to Instagram. When I first started my instagram account, I had 60% MALE followers, & 40% female. Now it is about 66% female & 34% male. I did NOT understand how these men found me, or why they would want to follow me. I DAILY block men who message me. They can say a simple “hey” or something a little more obscene but either way they both get blocked. I am happily married, & have no interest in this type of following. I also don’t want strange men (or women) in my business as far as my kids are concerned. So If your niche is gender specific (like I believe mine to be) unless its friends or families showing support, there is no need for men you don’t know to be following you!
Now a few more for personal (same rules apply for the most part as business plus a few extra).
4)DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT post about your vacations while you are away! I may write a post about my vacation while still at the airport BUT I won’t write it while I’m there. Do you know how many break-ins there have been because people wrote they were away on their PERSONAL FB! You NEVER EVER KNOW & do not take a risk. No one needs to know you won’t be home.
5)CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIENDS LIST! When we were pregnant with my older daughter, my husband & I both did a sweep. People who we never interacted with got deleted. We do this 1-2x a year. If we are not in touch ever, if we do not want you in our business, we will delete you. It is not to be mean or rude, but its all about privacy. I share pics of my girls A LOT. They are my pride & joy. But I want to share them with people who I genuinely know & care about, not someone I went to school with 20 years ago & never spoke to again.
Those are my top 5 tips for staying safe online (for business & personal). Do you have anything you would add?

Bravo!!! ThankU Jenna for writing about this. I’ve been called neurotic—a title I’ll gladly wear in exchange for my family’s safety.
One more thing-I keep my settings to receive friend requests only from friends of friends. Occasionally I need to open up those settings so that someone I know may friend me. The floodgates open up and every military man in the Middle East 😉 friend requests me, sooooo I DO NOT leave those settings open for longer than needed and quickly block said army guys.
Please be so careful, mamas it’s a wild world. And not in a good way.

Carmela,
I will gladly wear that hat as well. We do not live in a safe world.I have about 300 pending friend requests on Facebook. I will not add you unless I know you. I just will sleep better at night as a mom knowing I did what I could to keep my babies safe!!! You follow your instincts, thats why we have them!!!
